Glossary
The TV data industry is full of specialist terms and phrases
- 26 hour time - some countries have a broadcast day running from 02:00 to 01:59 (aka 25:59) the following day
- 27 hour time - some countries have a broadcast day running from 03:00 to 02:59 (aka 26:59) the following day
- 30 hour time - some countries have a broadcast day running from 06:00 to 05:59 (aka 29:59) the following day
- Audience - the number of people in the audience category viewing a given minute, transmission or interval. This is often expressed in thousands or millions
- Audience category - a grouping of individuals by a given demographic - e.g. females, or > 18 years old or housewives
- Break - see interval
- Break data - see interval data
- Broadcast day - a calendar day who's start is not necessarily 00:00. Many countries start their broadcast day at 06:00 and continue until 05:59 (aka 29:59) the following day
- Channel - see station
- Consolidated viewing - viewing that includes playback of recordings up to a specific number of days after it was originally broadcast. e.g. consolidated 28 includes live, VOSDAL, and recorded viewing from the time it was first broadcast until 28 days after broadcast
- Household - a home who's viewing has been recorded or estimated
- HUT - this is the %'age of households in the universe (total tv / universe) see also put
- Impact by time - see minute data
- Interval - a period of time on a given channel on a given date when there is non-programme material being shown (see also spot and break)
- Interval data - (see also spot)
- Live viewing - viewing at the time a minute/transmission/interval was broadcast
- Minute data - the average audience on a given channel (or pseudo channel) at a given date and time (see also ibt)
- Panel - a group of individuals who have their TV viewing recorded to enable estimations of the national/regional viewing of all individuals
- Person - an individual who's TV viewing has been recorded or estimated

- PUT - this is the %'age of total tv of the universe (total tv / universe) see also hut
- Rating - see tvr
- Recorded viewing - viewing of recordings up to a specific number of days after it was originally broadcast. e.g. recorded 7 includes viewing of a programme on the day after it was first broadcast through to 7 days after broadcast
- Reach - the number of individuals who have watched a number of consecutive minutes of a given programme/channel
- Share - this is the %'age of the total viewers (audience / total tv) that are watching a given minute, transmission or interval

- Staggercast - a channel that is broadcast a fixed duration after it was originally broadcast - often 1 hour after
- Station - a monitored station which can also include pseudo stations where more than one station is combined (e.g. +1 channels) (see also channel)
- Telecast - see transmission
- Thousands - see audience
- Total TV - the sum of all station viewing for an audience category for a given period
- Transmission - a broadcast of a programme on a given channel at a given date and time (see also telecast)
- Transmission data - the viewing figures for one or more transmissions (see also programme data)
- TVR - Total Viewing Ratings - this is the %'age of the population (audience / universe) that is viewing a given minute, transmission or interval
- Universe - the number of people falling into the audience category in the country/region at this time. This is often expressed in thousands or millions
- Viewing figures - each of the measures (audience, total tv, universe, tvr, share, hut, put) that can be expressed about a given minute, transmission or interval
- VOSDAL viewing - viewing of a playback of a piece of content that was broadcast earlier in the same broadcast day often by the means of pausing live television
- Weight - for viewing estimated based upon a panel of individuals - the multiplier for a given individual that is used to estimate a national/regional figure of similar individuals
